CHRISTIAN SINGLES : GUIDE TO
ENDING LONELINESS AND DEPRESSION Cont.
Chapter 15. Four Stages of Maturity You Need To Know
But back to our topic, demanding attention. Let’s take the baby off
the hook for demanding attention, it’s only recourse. Babies have a
charming and redeeming skill, which God gave them early in their
infancy, to make the first months bearable for their exhausted parents:
They begin to smile, then chuckle, and all those sleepless nights are
forgiven and forgotten. God designed those sweet, toothless grins to
appear early, giving the little bundle of joy another, better, way to
communicate with frazzled parents. Everyone gets ecstatic over the first
smile and are not above making all sorts of silly faces to elicit more
smiles, caught up in the magic and mystery of baby’s happy grin.
2. Manipulation: Within a few months, babies learn a new way to get
what they want. A personal observation will illustrate this best. Five
month old Kayleigh had recovered from a cold, and she soon noticed that
when she coughed (a fake cough) and fussed a little, everyone would
scramble to pick her up, pat her back to help clear her lungs, and play
with her. Not one to miss a sure-fire attention-getter, Kayleigh
continued with her new routine until relatives noted that her cough
miraculously ceased when she was picked up. Her mother calls her, “Kayleigh,
the drama queen!” In an innocent way, this 5 month old used
manipulation to alleviate the boredom of lying in her crib.
Manipulation by adults , however, is not innocent. It is a form of
witchcraft at worst, attempting to control others. This robs the victim
of their right to choose and decide for themselves. Greed and control
are the building blocks of manipulation in the adult world.
