Chapter 12. Steps To Take Now

These exercises can help you learn how to control the rate and depth of breathing and are often recommended for people with chronic chest diseases such as bronchitis. By slowing down breathing it can help people with anxiety, who breathe too deeply and rapidly, and as a result disturb the chemical composition of their blood. To practice slow, rhythmic deep breathing, sit up straight, feet flat on the floor. You can place one hand on your chest and the other one slightly above the navel. The hand on the chest should only feel slight movement but the hand on the stomach, as you exhale, should feel stronger movement. This isn’t necessary as far as doing the exercise correctly, but you will be able to feel the muscle groups used, and see how hard they work.

The actual exercise is quite simple. Just concentrate on doing this slowly. First inhale slowly through your nose and when you have filled your lungs and can’t hold anymore air, open your mouth and exhale slowly and fully, contracting your abdominal muscles, pushing all the air out. Then repeat the process again and again: Inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth. Do this for as long as you feel comfortable and concentrate on your breathing throughout, not letting your mind wander to anything else. Concentrating is an important aspect, as it takes your mind off your problems and focuses it elsewhere. This should help lower high blood pressure, help you relax and alleviate anxiety if done regularly over a period of time.
