CHRISTIAN SINGLES : GUIDE TO
ENDING LONELINESS AND DEPRESSION Cont.
Chapter 12. Steps To Take Now
1. Exercise; your choice, swimming, sports, walking, etc. Walk in the
sunshine. It will lift your spirits, increase your vitality and it comes
with a free gift from the Creator, namely, vitamin D, so essential for
your good health. If weather doesn’t permit, walk in the mall, have a
friend or neighbor join you, or even organize a “Power Walk” if you’re
not burrowed too far into your shell, which may well be the case now. Do
what you can do, comfortably.
Health experts’ enthusiasm for the great benefits of exercise
should spur all of us to make it a regular daily priority. Any activity
counts as exercise; cleaning the house, washing the car, etc., but the
best exercise is one that gives your heart and lungs a workout too. If
you walk, do it as briskly as possible. Your upper body could be
exercised simultaneously by swinging the arms or doing isometric
exercises as you walk. This is easy, as you just tighten muscles and
relax. You can tighten and relax fingers, upper arm muscles and even
belly muscles, all while walking, sort of a “multi-tasking” effort
on your part. But, hey, why stop there? You could also sing with gusto
or repeat positive messages to your brain, reminding it that you no
longer will accept the same old despairing thoughts as usual, and your
brain must get with the program.
The mental benefits of exercise are just what the doctor ordered for
depression, hopelessness and loneliness. Exercise can tackle anxiety and
nervous tension. And another fringe benefit is a state of euphoria after
a good workout. It has been called post-exercise euphoria or endorphin
rush, because neurotransmitters, including endorphins, lift your mood
and relax you. Try it, you’ll like it! If you think about the times in
the past when you worked out in a gym or ran, didn’t it make you feel
better about yourself and about your future? This, in turn, relieves
stress. Another benefit of regular exercise is that it stimulates you to
eat more healthful foods, which, in turn, gives you more energy and
(dare I say it?) zest for life. Remember, God instructs us to “CHOOSE
LIFE “ !!!!!!!!!!!!
