Chapter 28. Famous People Who Suffered
Loneliness And Depression
Their Woes Increase As The Risen Christ
Rocks Their World!
Now, when the centurion and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw
the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly,
saying, “Truly this was the Son of God.”
All these terrifying woes, and much more were to come on the third
day, when Jesus rose from the dead! Imagine the desperation and despair the
leaders felt when they heard that the huge stone had been rolled away and
the corpse was gone. Just three days before, the chief priests and Pharisees
came unto Pilate, saying:
Sir, we remember that the deceiver said, while he was yet alive, “AFTER
THREE DAYS I WILL RISE AGAIN.” Command therefore that the sepulcher be
made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night and steal
him away, and say to the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last
error shall be worse than the first. Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch;
go your way, make it as sure as you can. So they went and made the sepulcher
sure, sealing the stone and setting a watch (someone to guard and watch it.)
But Jesus arose, following another great earthquake, and the angel of the
Lord descended from heaven and rolled back the stone from the door and sat
upon it. The men who were there to keep watch began to shake and became as
dead men. Later, these watchmen told the chief priests all that had
happened. The chief priests bribed them with money and a promise that
they would get a pardon from the governor for them, if they would lie,
testifying, “ His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we
slept.”
