Chapter 28. Famous People Who Suffered
Loneliness And Depression
Chapter 28: More Examples Of Loneliness And Depression In The New
Testament
I have a feeling, Christian singles, that some of the most bewildered,
depressed and outraged people who watched as Jesus ministered to throngs of
followers, must have been the Chief priests, Pharisees and Sadducees. These
were the leaders of the Jews: the Pharisees were more concerned with
theological aspects of their faith, while the Sadducees were prominent in
the politics of the time and closer to the Roman government. The Pharisees
were furious when Christ healed people on the Sabbath, because they were
more strict than God ever intended, about the law, and they saw Christ’s
healing as working on the Sabbath. The Sadducees, however, could not have
cared less about that; they were outraged when Jesus brought Lazarus back
from the dead, because they did not believe in the resurrection of the dead.
Both feared a messiah could upset their hold on power, and cause persecution
from the hated Romans.
One wonders how they could have been so well versed in the Scriptures,
and yet could not have recognized their Messiah from the many descriptions
and references to Him in the Bible. Describing how the Pharisees feared
Jesus, John 11: 47-53 says:
Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said,
What do we? For this man doeth many miracles. If we let him thus alone, all
men will believe on him; and the Romans shall come and take away both our
place and nation.
And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year,
said unto them, Ye know nothing at all. Nor consider that it is expedient
for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation
perish not. And this spake he not of himself; but being high priest that
year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation. And not for that
nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of
God that were scattered abroad. Then from that day forth they took council
together for to put him to death.
