Loneliness And Depression
Examples of Depression And Loneliness in The New Testament
Christian singles, I’ve heard others say that Jesus suffered depression
as he prayed for the cup (of death) to pass from him, for Isaiah 53 clearly
prophesies that the Messiah was a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
Surely our Lord’s human nature felt the full impact of what he would
suffer on the cross, and you could say it depressed him deeply. And he was a
man of sorrows because “his own (people) received him not.” He also wept
over Jerusalem because they did not recognize him as their Messiah:
Luke 31:31 “O, Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and
stonest them that are sent unto thee; How often would I have gathered thy
children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye
would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate, and verily I say
unto you, Ye shall not see me until the time come when ye shall say, BLESSED
IS HE THAT COMETH IN THE NAME OF THE LORD.”
Luke 19:41 And when he was come near, he beheld the city (Jerusalem) and
wept over it, Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this, thy
day, the things which belong unto thy peace! But now they are hid from thine
eyes. For the days shall come upon thee, that thy enemies shall cast a
trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,
And shall lay thee (the temple) even with the ground and thy children
within thee; and
They shall not leave in thee one stone upon another, because thou knewest
not the time of thy visitation.
But to say that he suffered depression the way we suffer depression can’t
be true. There is quite a difference between clinical depression, and
feeling depressed over a specific problem. As noted before, if we experience
a time of loss or something that hurts us deeply, we could describe
ourselves as sad, depressed, or blue, but as long as we don’t dwell on
those thoughts and allow them to lodge in our minds, they will not lead to
clinical depression. It is doubtful that God Incarnate would suffer a mental
disorder, don’t you think, Christian singles?
