Loneliness And Depression
Hannah Suffered Depression and Humiliation Because She Was
Barren.
Christian singles, in 1 Samuel, Chapters 1 and 2, we read the story of
Hannah, a godly woman who suffered great depression and sorrow, not being
able to give her loving husband Elkanah, a child. This did not affect his
love for her, because he said, Hannah, why weepest thou? And why eatest thou
not? And why is thy heart grieved? Am I not better to thee than ten sons?
But the heartless Peninnah, whom he married because Hannah was barren,
constantly tormented Hannah. Like Abraham, Sarah and Hagar, this household
turned into a three ring circus, with the women jealous of each other. Both
men deeply loved their barren wives, so the mothers of their children had to
play second fiddle, even though only they could produce heirs for their
husbands. But, as we have seen before, Christian singles, God answered the
prayers of these barren, depressed and humiliated women, and their sons
became great men. All sorrow and depression were gone when Sarah and Hannah
brought forth their sons.
Hannah did not turn bitter toward the Lord, though she fretted and
sorrowed over Peninnah’s barbs, and she was so sad and dejected, she wept
and did not eat. She even made a solemn promise to the Lord that she would
give her baby to the Lord all the days of his life. But one glorious,
fateful day, when Eli saw her praying, (but she was moving her lips and
praying silently,) Eli thought she was drunk. He said to her, “How long
wilt thou be drunken? Put away thy wine from thee.“ And Hannah answered
him:
