Chapter 28. Famous People Who Suffered
Loneliness And Depression
Depression: The Cause of Suicides In The Bible
Elijah, Weary And Depressed, Prayed For Death Under The
Juniper Tree
In Chapter 19 of I kings, we read the story of Elijah fleeing from the
wicked Jezebel, wife of Ahab, King of Israel. Jezebel was irate because
Elijah slew the prophets of Baal, after they proved to have no power over
the God of Israel. They failed miserably in a contest of supernatural
prowess against the great prophet Elijah and the Lord. They were 850 strong,
450 prophets of Baal, plus 400 prophets of the grove who ate at Jezebel’s
table. To add insult to injury, Elijah had previously met with King Ahab and
they had this exchange of words:
I Kings, 18:17: And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said
unto him, “Art thou he that troubleth Israel?” And he answered, “I
have not troubled Israel, but thou and thy father’s house, in that ye have
forsaken the commandments of the Lord, and thou hast followed Baalim.”
This led to the contest on Mt. Carmel mentioned above, where Jezebel’s
prophets of Baal failed in their contest against Elijah and his God. It was
a contest that was stacked against the prophets of Baal from the start, for
they were no match for one true prophet, Elijah and his God. We can apply
this principle to our war against the principalities and powers of evil, and
you, Christian singles, standing only with the Lord. He is all we need to be
victorious over the devil’s army! They are a defeated foe, not entities to
be feared, because Our Lord defeated them 2000 years ago. Please never worry
about them, nor give in to their ploys and dirty tricks. You have been given
power to tread over them and make them flee. They use our minds and emotions
to create fear, anger, anxiety, and self-rejection, which lead to loneliness
and depression, and many more maladies. But we can render them helpless by
the Blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony. Remember, satan and
his army are on Death Row, and their Day Of Judgment is coming! Let’s
pick up the story from here, Chapter 19 of I Kings:
