Chapter 28. Famous People Who Suffered
Loneliness And Depression
THE FIRST MURDER RESULTED FROM RAGE, DEPRESSION AND JEALOUSY
Cain’s story continues, and life gets a bit better. He marries, and has
children, one of them being Enoch, after whom Cain named the city he built.
It wasn’t until Seth, Adam and Eve’s son, had a son of his own named
Enos that the men and women alive then began to call upon the name of the
Lord. But sin grew, too, and eventually one of Cain’s progeny, Lemech
killed another man in revenge. As sin escalated, God brought the flood to
cleanse the earth of evil. The rest of the cases of depression and
loneliness will not be in chronological order, Christian singles, because
Grandma isn’t too hot at math, and the long lives of those who became
depressed may have overlapped others, making it hard to keep every thing in
order. But this assortment of people will demonstrate that depression and
loneliness are “equal opportunity” demons of the mind, not caring whom
they strike. The fuel and power of their attack though, we must remember,
are the ROOT causes, that we have allowed to infect our minds and emotions,
leaving us open and defenseless to attack. We have given the enemy the right
to use our negative, ungodly emotions to do further damage. But aren’t you
glad, Christian singles, that Jesus has overcome sin and death, and we can
be assured that by his stripes we are healed? What a loving and gracious
Savior, to provide a way out of depression, despite our harboring negative
feelings such as anger, resentment, self-hatred, shame, envy and fear, some
of the root causes of depression! Let’s look at some Old Testament
characters whose depression drove them to suicide, and then compare their
stories with the infamous suicide of Judas in the New Testament, who
betrayed Christ. Then we will look at lonely and depressed people in the New
Testament, followed by some of the saints, living and dead who struggled
with depression, as well as secular leaders and celebrities.
