CHRISTIAN SINGLES : GUIDE TO
ENDING LONELINESS AND DEPRESSION Cont.
Chapter 23 Self Sabotage; When You Shoot Yourself In
The Foot!
Love is patient and kind, never jealous or envious, never boastful or
proud, never selfish, haughty, or rude. Love does not demand it’s own
way. It is not irritable or touchy. It does not hold grudges and will
hardly even notice when others do it wrong. It is never glad about
injustice, but rejoices whenever truth wins out.
If you love someone you will be loyal to him no matter the cost.. You
will always believe in him, always expect the best of him, and always
stand your ground in defending him. All the special gifts and powers
from God will someday come to an end, but love goes on forever….There
are three things that remain- faith, hope and love, and the greatest of
these is love.”
Recalling the two great commandments Jesus gave us: Love God with all
your heart, and love others as you love yourself, we can now apply the
Love Chapter to each of these relationships. How we love God, others and
ourselves will demonstrate whether we have perfect love, undiluted with
jealousy, selfishness, demanding our own way, impatience, etc. Paul goes
on to say, “Let love be your greatest aim.” This will keep us
so busy, we won’t have time to fear anything, carry around repressed
anger, or give in to shame, envy, or that old bugaboo, depression! If
one of these old habits demands attention, we can tell it we’re all
booked up, trying to fulfill our greatest aim, Love, and maybe we can
pencil it in, on the 12th of never! Having perfect love for
God, others and perfect love for ourself
(meaning a humble, respectful love for ourselves, not an unhealthy
self-love, like
narcissism ) will definitely keep us busy, as we strive to live it
out in a practical way. For instance, we will want to talk with those we
love, and do little acts of kindness and thoughtfulness to show how much
they are appreciated and loved, which should be easy for Christian
singles. It has been noted that the Lord is sentimental, and often
surprises His “kids” on special anniversaries or days, so why not
send Him sentimental love notes? How, you may ask? Well, you and a
prayer partner could get together in person or on the phone and send up
a message of love, telling how much you love and appreciate all He has
done, beginning with His victory over sin and death on the cross for
you, and up to the present, all the ways He comforts you, or even the
funny things he does, since He also has a sense of humor. Another way to
send love notes to the Lord is to go to the prayer sites on the
internet, where you can type in praise reports which will be read by
prayer chains around the world, and they will rejoice with you, bringing
honor to the Lord. It is good to be thankful for everything, large and
small.
