CHRISTIAN SINGLES : GUIDE TO
ENDING LONELINESS AND DEPRESSION Cont.
Chapter 23 Self Sabotage; When You Shoot Yourself In
The Foot!
Sometimes we have fear that has not been dealt with, and that causes
depression and a feeling of helplessness. You already know the antidote
for fear; faith! The Bible also tells us that perfect love casts out all
fear. This has to come from the Lord. Ask Him for more faith and for
perfect love. (for Him, others and yourself!) Psychologists have
therapies for treating self sabotage, some that talk about the various
entities or voices we hear in our minds, but I found it hard to imagine
my brain carrying around a cast of three or four characters, all vying
for my attention and obedience. Since I’m not a psychologist, I just
think of the voices or thoughts I hear including my own self
affirmations, (which I use to drown out old negative thoughts from the
past, plus any venom from the enemy) and then the one voice I always
want to hear, the sweet Holy Spirit, who is always available to you,
too, Christian single! The sweet, consoling words and feelings that our
heavenly Comforter gives us, are true and reliable, even more faithful
than our own life-affirming words. They can drive out depression, shame,
repressed anger, and any fear our hearts may still harbor. But what
about perfect love? What is that? It is love without guile, honest,
humble, with no strings attached. Paul describes it best in 1Cor.13 (The
Love Chapter) and it bears repeating here. This chapter is meant to be
meditated upon, asking ourselves if we really do love without negative
emotions attaching themselves to the love we give others. Paul says, “If
I had the gift of being able to speak in unknown languages and could
speak in every language there is in all of heaven and earth, but didn’t
love others, I would only be making noise. If I had the gift of prophecy
and knew all that was going to happen in the future, knew everything
about everything, but didn’t love others, what good would it do? Even
if I had the gift of faith so that I could speak to a mountain and make
it move, I would still be worth nothing at all without love. If I gave
everything I had to the poor, and if I were burned alive for preaching
the Gospel but didn’t love others, it would be of no value whatever.
