CHRISTIAN SINGLES : GUIDE TO
ENDING LONELINESS AND DEPRESSION Cont.
Chapter 22. Three Dangerous Words And What They Have
To Do With The Runaway Bride!
Shame is another one of those root causes that is helpful in small
doses or harmful if it grows and takes on a life of it’s own,
overwhelming a victim suffering from low self-esteem. Just as fear is
part of our self preservation and survival system when danger lurks
ahead, fear also can cripple a person over time and rob them of a full
and happy life, if it takes over their psyche, just as toxic shame can
do.
Before we look closer at the damage of long term shame, Christian
singles, I’d better explain why I added the Runaway Bride reference to
kindle your curiosity. The runaway bride has explained that she has
mental health issues, though she didn’t reveal what they are. However,
Jennifer Wilbanks exhibited one of the classic symptoms of shame by running
away.
Some of you may be groaning now, tired of news coverage of this
never-ending saga. Let’s get real with each other, O.K.? Christian
singles, admit it, aren’t you ticked off at the runaway bride? She
took us on one long roller coaster ride, first fearful that she had been
abducted and possibly murdered, and then outraged that she had made it
all up, apparently for no logical reason. She went from “sympathetic
victim” to “self-absorbed twit” over night!
However, shame is implicated in numerous cases where parents just run
away from home, leaving spouse and children to fend for themselves.
This can apply to teen runaways, too. If shame played a role in
her “great escape” let’s hope that her psychiatrist can ferret out
the history of her shame so she can be set free. If shame is at the
bottom of her bizarre behavior, it could be traced back to her early
childhood or be a result of her recent arrest record.
“Below every addiction, compulsivity, and other life controlling
problem lies SHAME.” James Potter, PhD.
