Chapter 21. The Green-Eyed Monster Called Envy
James 3:14-17 “…If you have bitter ENVYING and strife in your
hearts, glory not and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descended
not from above, but is earthly, sensual and devilish. For where ENVYING
and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom
that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle…full of mercy
and good fruits…
If you are familiar with Dante’s Inferno, among the seven deadly
sins, envy misses being the greatest sin only because pride is worse.
Dante’s punishment for those guilty of envy was to have their eyes
sewn shut, so that they could not see what others had, and thus, not be
envious. Luckily for us, God has a better way of dealing with envy! He
teaches us to renew our minds, and to become more like His Son, which
puts us on the fast track to rising above envy and other self-defeating
sins. He is always ready to forgive us and give us the strength to
overcome all destructive attitudes and habits. His way sure beats
getting your eyes sewn shut, doesn’t it? Well, with that icky mental
picture behind us, let’s have a few laughs, OK?
