CHRISTIAN SINGLES : GUIDE TO
ENDING LONELINESS AND DEPRESSION Cont.
Chapter 21. The Green-Eyed Monster Called Envy
A person with this façade is to be pitied and prayed for, although
we usually react to him as a “royal pain” and we want to distance
ourselves from him. He has such fragile self-worth that he leaves
himself wide open to a myriad of mental and physical diseases. Worse
yet, he falls short of the glory of God if he does not repent and change
his thinking. It should be self-evident that all races and people groups
were created by God, and that He loves all of us equally. A better, and
safer attitude toward the people Christ died for is to be humble and
have a servant’s heart, without arrogance or judgment. I feel sure
that most Christian singles already have a humble servant’s heart but
it is worth repeating.
Psychologist Joyce Brothers said: “Envy is a prime cause of the
discontentment many people feel about their lives. Yet we are so ashamed
of envious feelings that we seldom pull them out into the light where we
can get a good look at them.” If we did, we could also see that we are
moving into self-pity, with depression close behind. Envy weakens us and
makes us feel undeserving, unworthy and unloved, a perfect recipe for
mental disorders, primarily depression. If we envy what someone has, we
wallow in self-pity and do severe damage to our self-esteem and
self-worth. Once envy takes hold, it often escalates into envying and
begrudging many others of what they have, or what they have
accomplished.
