CHRISTIAN SINGLES : GUIDE TO
ENDING LONELINESS AND DEPRESSION Cont.
Chapter 21. The Green-Eyed Monster Called Envy
Envy, one of the seven deadly sins, is also listed in the Ten
Commandments as coveting: Thou shalt not covet…(thy neighbor’s
possessions, etc.) The dictionary defines covet as longing or lusting
for something that belongs to someone else. Coveting becomes envy, which
is like a toxic poison to our souls, minds and bodies.
We covered envy in previous chapters but it is such an egregious,
glaring sin, it deserves a closer look so that we may be reminded to
never let envy twist our minds, nor ruin our health, and, especially,
never come between the Lord and us. Envy does twist our minds in many
ways. We forget to be thankful for all the other blessings we have (a
positive, life-affirming emotion) and we are consumed with envying what
someone else has (a deadly emotion.) This then can lead to depression
and loneliness as bitterness and resentment control our thinking. In
Prov.14:30 we see how damaging envy can be: “A sound heart is the life
of the flesh:but ENVY, the rottenness of the bones.” And in
Prov.17:22, we see another danger to the health of our bones: Remember,
Christian singles, A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a
broken spirit drieth the bones.”
A medical dictionary describes what happens inside the bone marrow;
“Red bone marrow is the factory for most of the blood cells. A bone
marrow biopsy can diagnose many blood disorders such as anemia,
leukemia, bone marrow failure, cancers and tumors, some infections and
autoimmune system disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis, where the
body’s immune system attacks its own tissue.”
