CHRISTIAN SINGLES : GUIDE TO
ENDING LONELINESS AND DEPRESSION Cont.
Chapter 20. Is Depression An Addiction? Can We, Instead, Become
Addicted To Joy?
The premise of this theory (that depression is an addiction, caused
by our need to make the weakness and pain go away) may explain why some
of us hang on to depression, even years after a loved one dies, or long
after we have physically healed from an accident or other trauma. It is
more palatable, and less painful, not to deal with the underlying lack
of strength and the pain of feeling unloved, but to be able to say “I
have an illness, depression.” But the theory continues; in accepting a
diagnosis of depression, you are attempting to cover over the basic
weakness that brought you to this point, as well as the nagging belief
that you are unworthy and unlovable. The lack of strength and lack of
resolve to regain good mental health due to your unfounded belief that
your life is worthless, makes depression look easier to bear, and easier
to resolve. Now, you won’t have to deal with your PERCEIVED
unworthiness, which is far more painful than depression is..
In people who are addicted to depression, it is hard to give up their
illness because it is a smoke screen to hide behind. Further
complications come as they also choose to escalate their problem with
anger, tantrums, harsh words, or demands that others listen to their
list of complaints over and over again. They give in to health problems
such as headaches, stomach distress, asthma, back aches, and more.
Finally, they give in to worse mental problems such as paranoia and
other disabling mental illness. As time goes by, they look for pain
relief in drugs (possibly because prescription drugs no longer help),
alcohol, gambling, overeating, binges of all kinds, etc.
