CHRISTIAN SINGLES : GUIDE TO
ENDING LONELINESS AND DEPRESSION Cont.
Chapter 20. Is Depression An Addiction? Can We, Instead, Become
Addicted To Joy?
Christian singles, please note: This chapter has been difficult to
write because it covers the theory that we choose depression to
deal with unhappy or devastating events in our lives. Grandma will try
to soften the pain you may feel in reading this, because I don’t want
to hurt your feelings. But if this theory seems to fit your case, by all
means consider it, as it may help you overcome depression. This theory
floated around about 35 years ago, probably before the medical community
discovered chemical causes in the brain that could be balanced by the
use of anti-depressants and other drugs. Nevertheless, we’ve seen how
we can fall into habits that are hard to break, even after we have tried
prescribed medicine and other therapy. So the goal of this chapter, if
this theory applies to you, is to break those habits once and for all,
and exchange these harmful habits with life-giving, self-affirming
positive habits.
It has been known for ages that when we find ourselves in a painful
situation, either a prolonged agony or defeat, or a sudden tragedy such
as loss of a loved one, death, or substantial injury, we are in a
weakened position. In this weakened state, we experience hopelessness
and lose much of our natural survival instinct, and even wonder why we
should continue fight for life and hope for happiness in the future. It
is at this point that the words in the song, “Old Man River” ring
true: “Tired of living, Scared of dying”. We lack the feeling of
being loved and we do not see our worthiness or our positive attributes.
We say to ourselves, “Why do I keep struggling, nothing will change.”
Our strength is poured out of us, and there is no fight left in us,
so we just give up.At this point, we may choose to call ourselves
depressed, because it hurts us less if we have a clinical explanation
for the lack of strength, the weakness, we can’t seen to overcome.
Have you ever experienced this? You have these symptoms that have made
you very weak and listless, and perhaps others might not see anything
wrong with you, so they tell you to get over it, or that it’s all in
your head. That’s what happened to me when I had low-blood sugar. Oh,
I was so happy to hear my glucose level was down to 29! Now my malaise
had a name, hypoglycemia! This happened in the 70’s, when few doctors
believed it was an actual medical condition but luckily for me, I’d
read a book about it and knew that diet was the cure. Once my glucose
was tested, I went full throttle into a high protein diet and the
results were immediate. My weakness and foggy mental state were gone. If
any of you Christian singles have a blood sugar problem, I hope you won’t
waste as much time getting help for it. Luckily for you, now doctors do
believe low blood sugar is a medical condition that requires treatment.
