CHRISTIAN SINGLES, WASTE NOT,
WANT NOT!
What people don’t know is that the
freshness date on canned food is much, much longer than indicated on
the can. You can call your local Cooperative Extension for facts and
booklets on the safety of stored food, whether canned, frozen or
fresh. Actually, canned food can last for a few years, so if you take
the time to check with the above information bureau or any agency that
has this information, you can consider buying more canned food when it
is on sale (or better yet, a “fire sale” such as I found, saving
$1.00 per can.) But be sure that the sales item is something you will
definitely use! If you find something non-perishable on a terrific
sale, you could purchase a large quantity and use it to barter with
neighbors, as well.
Old timers didn’t waste soap, but saved the
slivers inside a sock or crocheted mitten made to hold soap slivers
when taking a bath. They tried to drain condiment bottles, like
ketchup, by placing the nearly empty bottle on top the other bottle
opening. This was called “marrying” the condiments, and
restaurants do that to this day.
