RUTH S DEVOTION AN INSPIRATION
TO CHRISTIAN SINGLES
This tender song captures the devotion of
Ruth for Naomi. Ruth gleaned food in the field of Boaz, a kinsman of
Naomi’s husband, a mighty man of wealth and also a man of honor.
Happily, Boaz had high regard for Ruth and they married. This must
have gladdened Naomi’s heart, as grandchildren soon came along, and
her depression and hurt feelings about the Lord’s seeming rejection
lifted. But, Christian singles, Naomi didn’t know the half of it!
Her grandchild (O.K., technically it wasn’t her grandchild, but
since she considered Ruth her daughter, and called her “daughter“
it was a “grandchild in love.”) this child, Obed, would become the
ancestor of King David and therefore of Jesus Christ! It must have
seemed odd to these Godly women that Ruth had never conceived with her
first husband of 10 years, Mahlon, Naomi’s son. But the Lord, who
knew the future, gave Ruth the honor of becoming the ancestor of the
long-promised Messiah! She is even listed in His genealogy in Matthew
1:5. The first son of Boaz and Ruth, Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat
David. Do you suppose, Christian singles, Naomi and her beloved
daughter Ruth realized what an incredible honor was bestowed upon
them, after they had suffered the loss of their husbands in Moab? The
moral of the story, dear ones, is that you never know what the Lord
has in store for you, so it’s best to “expect a miracle” as you
draw near to Him and He draws near to you!
So again, God brings joy to another saint who
had been in deep despair, hurt and depressed. But if their husbands
had lived, she and Ruth would never have traveled to Bethlehem, where
they could live out their destiny. It has been said that it was
providential that this union of a Jew and a gentile would ultimately
produce descendants who would carry the bloodline through King David
and on to Jesus, the Messiah. ( Matthew’s genealogy traces
Christ’s royal heritage through his legal father, Joseph. But
Luke’s genealogy traces Christ’s royal heritage through his actual
parent, Mary. Luke 3:23-38.)
