The story of Naomi and her daughter-in-law
Ruth is one of love and devotion between a Jewish mother-in-law and
her gentile “daughter-in-love”, a fitting title for Ruth. Ruth
showed an unusual devotion to Naomi, who was grieving the recent loss
of her husband and her two sons, one of whom was married to Ruth.
Naomi tried to convince her sons’ widows to stay in Moab when she
found out that the Lord had visited his people, and had given them
bread. One daughter-in-law was convinced to stay with her own parents,
but Ruth was steadfastly determined to remain with Naomi to take care
of her.
When they arrived in Bethlehem, Ruth set to
work immediately to find food for them. Naomi, when she talked with
people she knew, asked that they call her Mara instead:
(Ruth 1:20, 21) And she said unto them,
Call me not Naomi, call me Mara; (meaning bitter) for the Almighty
hath dealt very bitterly with me.(The
name Naomi means pleasantness or delight, which surely suited this
woman much better.) I went out full,
and the Lord hath brought me home again, empty; why then call ye me
Naomi, seeing the Lord hath testified against me, and the Almighty
hath afflicted me?
You may remember the song of Ruth, sung by
Les Paul and Mary Ford, taken from Ruth 1:16:
Whither thou goest I will go,
Wherever thou lodgest I will lodge.
Thy people shall be my people, my love,
Wither thou goest I will go.
