CHRISTIAN SINGLES: SAVE $$$ THIS CHRISTMAS BY
DRAWING NAMES
This is a natural for Christian singles at
the time of our Lord’s birth; why wouldn’t we want to make the
celebration of His birth more spiritually satisfying and meaningful?
Now I know that parents with older kids may have a hard sell on this
new concept of a less stressful, less budget-busting Christmas, but if
the kids can be informed ahead of time that expensive gifts will be
limited to one each, and the price must not exceed a certain figure,
say $50.00, this will give teens time to make their own money to buy
the latest game or electronic gizmo for themselves.
I think that we gradually, without thinking,
got ourselves into this abyss of outrageous spending at Christmas. No
doubt the advertising agencies egged us on, but we must have been
lulled into thinking that somehow these gifts would pay for
themselves. We never envisioned that we would ever be so far in debt
that all we could do is pay the minimum due each month. Being lulled
into a state of denial reminds me of the frog who didn’t try to jump
out of a slowly boiling pot of water until it was too late.
Some families use Christmas gift-giving to
buy items for their new home instead of personal gifts for each other.
Of course if everyone is in agreement, and no one is anticipating a
personal gift, this can work out happily for everyone. Those comfort
items like special cookware, small appliances, and other helpful
entertainment items will be enjoyed long after the holiday is over,
and will enhance your lives much more than splashy, expensive gifts
that you really did not need. Sometimes when we are given expensive
jewelry or clothing we want to keep it for special occasions, and end
up never using it at all!
It is my hope that maybe I have struck a
nerve, and many of you generous Christian singles have been looking
for ways to de-commercialize Christmas for some time. I know the
merchants have to make money too, and Christmas is their best season.
But somehow we need to come to grips with the fact that we can hardly
enjoy the spiritual meaning of Christmas because we are under so much
pressure to spend hundreds of dollars we haven’t even earned yet!
Maybe the change to a budget-friendly celebration will start with you!
Here are a few more ideas, and then, with your permission, would you
like to take a little time with the Lord, to get all this into
perspective?
