CHRISTIAN SINGLES: SAVE $$$ THIS CHRISTMAS BY
DRAWING NAMES
You could limit the value of the gift to
under $10, and make a list of nice things you would be willing to do
(for a gift of your time and energy,) such as washing their car,
babysitting, shampooing their carpets, or using your talents to make
something they would really appreciate. From that list, they could
choose one “gift of your Time and Energy.” LET’S BRING BACK
THOSE BARN RAISING DAYS OF THE PIONEERS! Probably none of your
relatives need a barn, but the generosity of working to help each
other get by could bring all of you together in a much more intimate
family bonding than ever before. Lets face it, Christian singles,
Madison Avenue has sold us a bill of goods! We do not have to buy
those expensive toys and gadgets that they prime our kids to beg us
for.
Did you ever watch children’s television?
The advertisers begin very early in a child’s development, making
them think they must have everything they see. Later, they will be
conditioned to believe they cannot fit in with the in-crowd if they do
not wear the latest styles, and have all the coolest “toys.” So
how can we fight back, given that advertising has had a free rein with
our minds for so long, thanks to the media? We can take a stand by
sharing with family and friends that we will no longer react to
advertising pressure like Pavlov’s dogs, salivating at the thought
of the next must-have gadget.
So the people in your life who also want to
cut spending will have an understanding ally in you. You could have
some planning sessions, and brain storm ideas for the best Christmas
celebration ever. This could include organizing carolers among those
who can sing (not to be confused with those of us who can only “make
a joyful noise!”) I believe that most families and friends secretly
feel under such heavy pressure to spend beyond their means that
they would be greatly relieved if someone would break the ice and say,
“I don’t know about you, But I just cannot spend the kind of money
I did last year on gifts and entertainment. Would you like to try
something different this year, and see what ideas we can come up with
to make the holiday more meaningful, more imaginative, and easier on
our budgets?”
